The Sabres laid an absolute beating on the Leafs last night, shelling both Ilya Samsonov and Martin Jones, racking up 9 goals on the night and allowing only 3 in a very lopsided victory on home ice. While Leaf fans were upset with the loss, they could have at least applauded the Sabres for teaching the Leafs a lesson were it not for the Sabres' production team throwing a cheap pot shot at the Leafs towards the end of the game.
With just over a minute to go in the game, the Sabres' production team began to pump the Hall & Oates classic "You Make My Dreams (Come True)" over the PA speakers in their home arena. Obviously, this was message to the Leafs, who had utilized the Hall & Oates tune as their goal song for years, only finally replacing it this year.
The Sabres may have found this funny, adding insult to injury in a blowout, but I can guarantee you that the Leafs didn't find it funny. Not one bit.
If the Maple Leafs were looking for some bulletin board material to get them fired up, there it is. Using a team's own former goal song to mock them in a runaway game is sending a clear message to them that you don't respect them. The Sabres may have made a crucial error in judgement with that one.
We have a long while to wait for the Leafs' response to the Sabres bumping Hall & Oates late in last night's game as the two teams don't play again until March. However, you can bet that the Leafs will keep that in mind, as the next meeting between these two teams occurs in Toronto.
