The Ottawa Senators have gone through massive changes this off-season. They've brought in two big names in Alex DeBrincat and Claude Giroux and added goaltender Cam Talbot to replace Matt Murray, who the team traded to the Leafs this summer. Talbot will begin the season on IR, but is expected to battle Anton Forsberg for the starting job between the pipes when he returns.

During an "on location" 32 Thoughts podcast, Sens GM Pierre Dorion and Head Coach DJ Smith joined Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek to discuss the off-season and expectations for this upcoming season. That included Friedman and Marek asking them to fill in the blank "This will be a successful season for the Ottawa Senators if" To finish that sentence, GM Pierre Dorion said it would be successful if the team's goalies' save percentage ended the season at .918. That's well above last season's league average and only one team finished above .914 last season (NY Rangers).

Dorion is clearly hoping that Talbot will bring better results than Matt Murray's .893 in 2020/21 and .906 in 2021/22, almost insinuating that Murray was the problem and not the team's horrible defensive structure and pairings. Considering that the Sens have failed to improve their blueline, Dorion is reaching for the stars with that expectation, while Matt Murray will be playing behind a much better defensive team in Toronto. The early returns on Murray have been very good during the preseason. Hopefully he can continue to experience success during the regular season.
