There's a balance during the preseason and teams are often only icing a handful of stars on any given night to not only give roster hopefuls an opportunity to show the coaches what they can do, but also to get some of their stars' legs moving and to help them re-gain their feel for game action. The problem, however, is sometimes lines are crossed, where fringe players battling for spots wind up battling against star players, playing them particularly hard to show that they belong the in NHL. Well, coaches don't really like that and Ottawa Senators head coach DJ Smith was very displeased with the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday and made sure to let the media know it.
The Leafs have been in a similar position in the past where star players were being targeted by fringe NHLers and AHLers, so we as fans know all about the frustrations of seeing someone like Scott Sabourin attempting to mix it up with franchise cornerstone Auston Matthews. But hey - as Leafs fans, I suppose we should all be hoping that the Habs and Sens beat the heck out of each other.
