Robertson has finally found his groove in this year's training camp, coming in a few pounds heavier and much stronger. He's looked so good over his last two preseason games that he appears to have bumped Denis Malgin off of the second line as Robertson skated next to William Nylander and Alex Kerfoot at practice today.
Following practice, Sheldon Keefe was asked about Robertson's overall performance throughout camp and the preseason and gave him some high praise, which could indicate that the 21-year-old has the inside track to a guaranteed roster spot. At the very least, he's not making it easy on Keefe and company as they contemplate roster cuts.
If Robertson continues to perform at this level, he should have a spot on the opening night roster. The only thing that may prevent him from playing is the fact he is waiver exempt, whereas Malgin and others are not. The Leafs have to decide if Robertson is worth risking losing a player on waivers or not, but the way he is playing, it should be a no-brainer.
