Ilya Samsonov was a surprise starter on Friday night against the Ottawa Senators. All day leading up to the game, Matt Murray had been expected to start, that is until a nagging ankle injury flared up during warmups. Murray was forced to watch from the bench as an ill prepared Samsonov was hung out to dry during what was a pathetic effort from the team in front of him. Had Samsonov been injured, the Leafs would have had to turn to an emergency backup netminder.

Ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Washington Capitals, the Leafs recalled goaltender Joseph Woll from the Marlies. He will act as the Leafs backup netminder until Murray is healthy. Keefe's update on Murray's status seemed to suggest that Woll will be collecting an NHL paycheque for at least the next little while.

"There's something there that's going to require some time for sure. The length of time we won't quite know really until we come back from the break. We'll have a better idea of exactly where that's at. We're not expecting it to be long term at this point." - Sheldon Keefe

Woll has been unbelievable for the Marlies since returning from an injury suffered in the pre season. He boasts a 12-1-0 record on the season so far. Hopefully he will get the chance to start at least one game with the big club while Murray heals up. As for Murray himself, all that matters is that he is healthy when the games count the most. The two time Stanley Cup champion is a playoff beast. Whatever this ankle issue is, it's best they do all they can to remedy it long before the post season begins.
