The Leafs did not put forth their best effort - well, no effort at all, really - in the 4-1 loss to the Kings. Following the game, Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe revealed that he didn't think any member of the team had it last night, referring to their level of engagement in the game. There was little energy to speak of, they didn't play with pace and they were embarrassed on home ice. Not a lot to like about that one.
During the game, Max Domi took a couple of ill-advised penalties, which many assumed would have irked Keefe. One was a bit of a horse-collar on Matt Roy to try to get him to drop the gloves, which earned Domi a roughing penalty. The other was a cross check and an extra whack with the stick on Kevin Fiala, which effectively ended Domi's night after being slapped with a 10-minute misconduct on top of his 2 minute cross checking penalty late in the 3rd period.
Surprisingly, neither play really irked Keefe as much as expected. The Leafs' bench boss revealed after the loss that he understood that Domi was just trying to spark the Leafs and give them some life - even if he doesn't agree with how Domi went about it.
I think we can probably bet on an extra intense practice today before the team departs for Boston for a Thursday night matchup with the Bruins at TD Garden.
