The Leafs lost Ilya Samsonov to a knee injury during Saturday night's 2-1 win over the Boston Bruins and with Matt Murray already out with an adductor injury, the Leafs only had Erik Kallgren and Dennis Hildeby (SHL) signed to an NHL contract.

Shortly after the game, the Leafs announced they signed Keith Petruzzelli to a 2-year entry-level contract. Petruzzelli was on an AHL deal with the Toronto Marlies as the Leafs were at the maximum 50 contracts until Nicolas Aube-Kubel was claimed off of waivers.

Petruzzelli has a 6-0 record this season with the Marlies posting a 2.31 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage. While it hasn't been ideal for the Leafs to sign him now, with the way he was playing, he was bound to get outside interest.

As Sheldon Keefe said yesterday, "Certainly, his signing is probably expedited given our situation, but he's a guy that our organization has believed in and, frankly, the way it was going his signing was somewhat inevitable."

Petruzzelli likely won't see much game action, possibly a start against Pittsburgh or Vancouver in the Leafs' back-to-back next weekend, but other than that it will likely be Kallgren's net until Murray, Samsonov or both return.
