Keefe benched Marner with eight minutes left in the third to send a message, but it wasn't much of one. Marner was back on the ice in no time. We won't know if the benching worked or not, but post-game, Keefe had this to say about Marner's turnovers.
"You just gotta know what's going on in the game. Everybody has to be responsible for their touch of the puck Both were well intentioned and everything like that it's just, they're tough plays. We gotta manage those plays better."
Marner is trying to do too much with the puck again as he tries to get Auston Matthews going consistently. Unfortunately, it caused him to make a pair of poor and costly decisions. It will be interesting to see how Keefe handles Marner come Wednesday's game against Philly. A demotion to the second or third line is probably warranted, but the Leafs are in dire need of a win. Tough decisions ahead.
