Some troubling news regarding Leafs prospect Rodion Amirov
During training camp, the Toronto Maple Leafs invited 2020 15th overall pick Rodion Amirov to be around the team, work with the team's trainers and to be around the team during meetings. The club also honoured the 21-year-old before the home opener on October 13th.
Since that time, Amirov has returned to Russia. Many fans within Leafs Nation had assumed that Amirov's return to Russia was to begin training for the KHL season, which is already well under way. Well, according to Amirov's agent, Dan Milstein of Gold Star Hockey, that isn't the case.
Milstein confirmed via an official release on social media on Tuesday that Amirov has returned to Russia to undergo additional treatments as he continues to battle brain cancer.
Amirov has already undergone 4 rounds of chemotherapy, which had concluded late this summer and the hope was that Amirov would be able to begin training and might be able to return at some point in late October or early November. Unfortunately, Milstein revealed that Amirov has been unable to train, which could indicate that he's been getting worse and not better. It's not going to do anyone any good to speculate, but Milstein's comments below don't exactly make this situation sound very promising for Rodion, who continues his fight.
This, of course, goes hand in hand with what Sheldon Keefe had mentioned a short time ago - that Amirov had quite the fight ahead of him. Nothing but love and support for Rodion during this difficult time.
