At 29 years old, a forward is usually considered in the latter portion of his prime. So when a player that young and in the prime of his career contemplates hanging up his skates, you know that he must be dealing with something pretty serious.

Now 30 years old and in his 13th NHL season, Tyler Seguin is off to a solid start and sitting at a point per game with 2 goals and 5 points in the Stars' first 5 games. After recording just 49 points last season, I'm sure many might view that as a horrendous season for a player making in excess of $9M per season. Knowing now what we didn't know then, it's probably something that should be celebrated.

Seguin was speaking with NHL.com's Mike Zeisberger when he revealed that had contemplated retirement during his recovery from hip surgery.

"I looked over at my friend and said, 'I don't know if I'll ever be able to play anymore. My career might be over. This might be it.' I just didn't see any light at the end of the tunnel.

"Whenever there are dark times, whenever I'm down, I think about that, about being in Muskoka, about where I've come from. That keeps you going."

So far, Seguin has rebounded well after last season and views 2022-23 as a season in which he can produce a lot more.

"I still think there is no way in (heck) I should be statistically where I was last year. So I keep thinking that, keep believing that, keep working towards that."

-Seguin on raising the bar this season in terms of production

Now that Seguin is feeling more himself again, it's just about going out there and executing. He's a point-per-game to start the year, so whatever he's been doing and the mindset that he carries with him into each game seems to be working.
