Perhaps one of the most underrated players in the NHL is Roope Hintz. The 26-year-old Finn is a strong 2-way center who has quietly had a couple of excellent seasons for the Dallas Stars. Today, the Stars announced a massive 8-year deal paying Hintz $8.45 million per season.
I have to admit, when I saw the number and term on this one my jaw dropped. It dropped again when I looked at Hintz's numbers over the past few seasons. Seriously, how is Roope Hintz THIS good?

Stars GM Jim Nill gave Hintz a glowing endorsement after the signing.
"Roope is a dynamic 2-way C who has proven to be one of the best at his position in the NHL. He's developed into one of our most versatile players, making an impact on special teams & at even strength, & can be counted on by our coaching staff in every situation."

Hintz's extension will start next season. His deal is another in a growing trend of GMs locking up players for max term this season. With the NHL's salary cap expected to rise dramatically over the next few years, it's a smart long-term move that the Leafs will likely follow in July when they look to sign Auston Matthews to his 8-year extension.
