Suspension handed out to Artyom Maltsev for hit from behind on Kirill Tankov that ended the Pens prospect's season
Have you ever heard the phrase ''the punishment should fit the crime''? Well, that phrase often doesn't line up when it comes to supplemental discipline in hockey. This much was clear when the KHL issued a suspension to Artyom Maltsev for his dangerous hit on Kirill Tankov on Monday.
For those of you who missed the play in question, you can see it below. The hit was dirty, reckless and has effectively taken Tankov out for the season, causing a suspected C5 vertibrae fracture.
Maltsev's suspension? Three games. Yes, you read that correctly - 3 games for breaking another player's neck on a completely avoidable hit to a downed opponent. I have no words.
