Injured on October 17th against the Coyotes, Jake Muzzin has not taken to the ice since. There were concerns initially that it was a concussion, but the Leafs made it known quickly that it was a neck injury instead.

Muzzin was in LA during the Leafs' most recent West coast road trip to see a head and neck specialist. The Leafs have yet to provide any update on the tests Muzzin had gone through or the results of those tests.

On TSN's Insider Trading, NHL Insider Chris Johnston provided an update regarding the reasoning for the tests and the wording he used indicates that Muzzin may not be able to play again.

"Jake Muzzin was in California to see a specialist last week looking at the head and neck area where he has had a number of injuries and I can tell you there is legitimate concern of what the next hit could look like if he were to return. If there is a Jake Muzzin size hole in their lineup, they got a need there for a defenseman and they got more cap space to play with."

"If he were to return." Those words by Johnston seem to indicate that the injury, combined with the injuries Muzzin has sustained over the years, have taken too much of a toll on his body and any return would sacrifice his quality of life after hockey. It's unfortunate, as the Leafs need a player like Muzzin on the blueline. He provides a much-needed veteran presence in the room. Not only is it unfortunate for the Leafs - this would be an unfortunate and untimely end to an otherwise successful career for the player.
