Some massive news has surfaced on Monday relating to the Olympic Games and both Russia and Belarus. Per the official International Olympic Committee website, Russia and Belarus are in breach of the Olympic Truce, and therefore, the IOC is recommending that neither Russian nor Belarusian athletes be invited nor take part in international competitions.

There are a wide range of recommendations from the IOC's Executive Board in the link below, but some of the major ones involve no events being planned in Russia or Belarus and that the Olympic Order be pulled from Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Chernyshenko, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, and Dmitry Kozak, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office.

The second recommendation on the list is a particularly interesting one, as it relates to Russian-born and Belarusian-born athletes being conditionally enabled to participate in international events.

Wherever this is not possible on short notice for organisational or legal reasons, the IOC EB strongly urges International Sports Federations and organisers of sports events worldwide to do everything in their power to ensure that no athlete or sports official from Russia or Belarus be allowed to take part under the name of Russia or Belarus. Russian or Belarusian nationals, be it as individuals or teams, should be accepted only as neutral athletes or neutral teams. No national symbols, colours, flags or anthems should be displayed.

With Russian athletes combining for a total of 547 medals from 1994-2022, the ramifications of such extreme measures will undoubtedly shift the playing field for all other participating countries.

Wild news on a Monday.
