The Joe Bowen play calls on Auston Matthews' 59th and 60th goals
Auston Matthews is a 60 goal scorer. If that doesn't put a smile on your face, you're reading the wrong website. Still, if the stat alone isn't enough for you, the iconic voice of the one and only Joe Bowen calling the play on both of Matthews goals against the Red Wings on Tuesday night definitely will be.
Matthews 59th goal of the season came off of a beautiful setup from exactly the players you would think would assist on a Matthews goal. Wait, hold on, I'm being told it was actually Colin Blackwell and Jason Spezza. A partial line change had Spezza and Blackwell on the ice with Matthews and they did exactly what they were supposed to do in that situation. Pass the puck to Auston. Spezza feeds Matthews the puck in the slot and Auston Matthews does what Auston Matthews does: put the puck in the back of the net.
Number 60 was a beauty. Morgan Rielly and William Nylander were credited with assists on this one, but in reality it was all Matthews. After Nylander ripped a one timer wide, Matthews retrieved the puck, avoided a check, and somehow managed to keep the puck in the zone. It was here the Detroit Red Wings made a fatal mistake, they gave Auston Matthews time and space. Before the Wings could correct their egregious error, it was too late. Matthews fired, there was a ringing of iron as the puck hit the underside of the crossbar, and Scotiabank Arena exploded. Auston Matthews, 60 goals. Incredible.
