A couple of months ago, Kyle Dubas traded a fourth liner in the AHL for an injury-plagued NHL defenseman, whom many thought had a pretty high ceiling. At the time, some Leafs fans were upset about trading 6'9 Curtis Douglas for 6'3 Conor Timmins, but since Timmins' debut and in every game since, that tone has changed.

Timmins just scored his first NHL goal on Sunday night and has amassed 10 points in 12 games since joining the Leafs, while providing very solid defensive play. Meanwhile, Douglas has just 4 points in 14 AHL games since the trade, playing bottom six minutes.

This trade is a perfect example of a complete heist. The fact that Dubas was able to pluck a legitimate NHL defenseman with legit top-4 upside out of Arizona in exchange for a depth AHLer who may never make a real impact at the NHL level is nothing short of larceny.

This is just one of many examples of Kyle Dubas' affinity for pulling off the unexpected. When you add that to the Samsonov signing, being gifted a pair of draft picks to take on 75% of Matt Murray's deal for the next two seasons and the addition of Calle Jarnkrok, who is currently thriving in the top six, Dubas has had himself a solid year. One has to wonder whether these moves are already enough to justify a lengthy, lucrative extension for the young GM.
