In what is a somewhat unsurprising turn of events, the Vegas Golden Knights have announced on Monday that head coach Pete DeBoer has been relieved of his coaching duties and that the team will begin its search for a new coach for 2022-23.

DeBoer coached the Western Conference Finals in back-to-back seasons in 2019-20 and 2020-21 before ultimately missing the playoffs this season. While DeBoer did coach the team to a 43-31-8 record this year, he also dealt with significant injury issues with Max Pacioretty, Jack Eichel, Alec Martinez, Nolan Patrick, William Karlsson, Reilly Smith, Robin Lehner and captain Mark Stone.

The obvious link that people will make right off the hop is that Golden Knights GM will pursue former New York Islanders head coach Barry Trotz, and it does make a lot of sense. However, there are rumours circulating that Trotz may want to transition into a GM role and hasn't made any decisions on his immediate future as of yet.

If Vegas leans towards another veteran coach, some other candidates could include Mike Babcock and John Tortorella.
