Thornton was a former 1st overall pick by the Boston Bruins back in 1997. His career spanned an incredible 24 years and 1,714 games, with an additional 130 career playoff games. His 1,539 regular season points rank 12th on the all-time list and his 1,109 career assists rank 7th overall in NHL history.
Thornton is a 4-time All-Star and has both an Art Ross Trophy and a Hart Memorial Trophy in his career, as well as an Olympic gold medal with Team Canada in 2010, as well as 2 World Cup gold medals in 2004 and 2016. There's little question that Thornton will be a first ballot Hall-of-Famer.
All the best to Thornton in his retirement. What a wonderful career, and while a Stanley Cup may have evaded him as a player, who knows? Perhaps we'll see him win one as an executive or a coach someday.
