Almost from the time he was acquired by the Senators at the 2022 draft, there were whispers that Alex DeBrincat would not be signing long-term in Ottawa. There was speculation as to why, but nothing was ever really substantiated.

After arriving in Ottawa and getting to work, DeBrincat became popular among his teammtes, but his mind never truly changed about wanting to leave. Now, according to Sens reporter Bruce Garrioch, we know why.

Per Garrioch, DeBrincat was not happy being the team's number two winger, behind Brady Tkachuk. While the Sens would have liked to have kept DeBrincat, his role was never going to change. He was not going to leap past the Sens captain on the depth chart and the reported controversy in the dressing room is not something any team wants, and so, DeBrincat got his out. He was traded to Detroit this summer, where he immediately signed a 4-year extension.

His former teammate Tim Stutzle fired a parting shot at him on a 32 Thoughts interview on Friday, saying, "If you don't want to be here, then good luck on your way."

It seems as though there was never going to be a long-term commitment from DeBrincat because he wanted to be "the guy", but he was never going to be that guy in Ottawa. Now in Detroit, he will look to prove he can be a top line threat alongside the likes of Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond.
