Treliving reveals where things are at between the team and William Nylander
With just a week until training camp begins, Leaf fans still await the news of an extension for William Nylander. Many are hoping that it will be finalized shortly now that the Leafs have locked up Auston Matthews to a new deal. Some are a little less optimistic. With rumours running wild that there have not been any discussions between Nylander's camp and the Leafs, there has been cause for concern. However, Brad Treliving sat down with The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun this week and discussed the situation with Nylander.
"I'm not going to get into the play-by-play of it other than to say he's a very good player and you always want to keep the good players, and he's told me he wants to be in Toronto. That's the most important thing. If there's a desire on both sides, then you should be able to come to an agreementIt starts with the understanding that we think Willy is a top player and we want him and he's telling me he wants to be there, so hopefully we can find a way to get it done. - Treliving on where things stand with Nylander
Treliving was also asked if negotiations had come to a halt between himself and Nylander due to the reports that there has been no movement. Treliving was quick to shoot down those reports saying, "No, no, no, we'll talk here prior to getting the season started and see where we're at. But we still have a year."
Treliving is essentially saying that he and Nylander are on the same page and those statements were echoed by Nylander's agent, Lewis Gross, who told The Athletic, "We're open to trying to get a deal done, as well."
Nylander and the Leafs have reportedly been more than a million dollars apart in terms of AAV and neither side has apparently budged from their ask. Heading into the final year of his current deal, Nylander is looking to have another career season following last season, when he put up 40 goals and 87 points, both career highs.
