At one point in time, Sean Monahan was seen as the future of the Calgary Flames, alongside Johnny Gaudreau. The former 6th overall selection in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft enjoyed rapid success in Calgary before hitting a skid he could never bounce back from, mostly due to persistent injury issues.

In years 2 to 6 between 2014-15 and 2018-19, Monahan scored 150 goals and 329 points in 396 games, including career highs of 34 goals and 82 points in 2018-19. Then he inexplicably slumped to the tune of 40 goals and 99 points in his final 185 games. He was then traded in the summer of 2022 to the Montreal Canadiens alongside a first round pick so the Flames could get out of his contract and alleviate some much needed cap space to sign Nazem Kadri.

In the final year of his contract and playing on a rebuilding Canadiens team, he is going to be a sought after option on the trade market with the trade deadline approaching. The Boston Bruins have expressed interest in the veteran centerman, which would go a long way in cleaning up their depth down the middle.

Being able to retain half of his salary will go a long way in completing a beneficial deal for both sides as Monahan has played fairly well for Montreal this season, scoring 6 goals and 17 points in 25 games. The Bruins currently sit in first place in the NHL with a 29-4-4 record after completing a comeback victory in the Winter Classic earlier today against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
