When on-ice sessions opened at Leafs training camp on Thursday, that's exactly where Bertuzzi landed. He spoke after the first day of camp about not taking his opportunity for granted and making the most of his time with the Leafs' two biggest stars. As it turns out, they're already forming some excellent chemistry.
During a Group 1 vs Group 2 scrimmage on day two of on-ice sessions, Bertuzzi worked his way behind the net, allowing time for Mitch Marner to get into position and set up for the one-timer before placing a perfect saucer pass right onto the tape. Marner made no mistake, wiring one past the monstrous 6-foot-7 Dennis Hildeby.
I don't know of many people who aren't excited to see what Bertuzzi can do with Matthews and Marner over an 82-game season. If he can stay healthy, he'll set himself up for a career season next to two of the brightest young stars in hockey.
