This is a bit disappointing to hear, but not a huge surprise. Mikheyev did previously ask for a trade out of Toronto as he wanted a more prominent role. As one of the most dangerous penalty killers in the league with elite speed, Mikheyev will have no shortage of suitors who will offer him that. Still, to see him leave the organization will hurt, and replacing what he brings to the ice won't be an easy task for Kyle Dubas.
In the past, I've looked at players leaving the Leafs for more money with contempt, wishing they'd taken discounts to play for the blue and white. The unfortunate truth is that players never know how long their NHL careers will last. Mikheyev in particular has already had one injury that easily could have ended his playing days. If and when he does sign elsewhere, I hope he is able to ink a long-term deal that sets him up for life. He's been a good soldier and he's certainly earned it with how he's played and how he's carried himself, even with his trade request last summer.
