VIDEO: NHL analysts try smelling salts for the first time and the results were hilarious
It's not uncommon in today's NHL to see players using smelling salts on the bench during games. The ammonia based inhalant exudes an odor so strong they've been used to wake up knocked out fighters in boxing and other combat sports. Smelling salts have been used dating all the way back to Ancient Rome. Players often use them to "wake up" for games, in fact, Mitch Marner is often seen using them on the Leafs' bench.
After seeing Flames defenseman Nikita Zadorov struggling to use smelling salts on the bench, Sportsnet's Ryan Leslie and Eric Francis decided to try it themselves, with hilarious results. Neither analyst was ready for the potent smell coming out of what I'm sure was a brand new bottle. It probably didn't help they they were holding the bottle much closer to their noses than is recommended. This can actually leave the user with an ammonia burn on the inside of their nostrils. Their reactions were funny enough to land on the Sportsnet Instagram channel.
