Easton Cowan was seen as a questionable pick by many when the Leafs selected him in the first round, 28th overall, this past June. The 18-year-old is proving everybody who doubted him wrong so far in the pre-season. After leading the Leafs in scoring during the Traverse City prospects tournament, Cowan found the back of the net in his first pre-season game with the big club on Monday.

With the Leafs on the powerplay and trailing 2-0 in the first, Nick Abruzzese sent the puck down low, behind the Senators' net to Noah Gregor. Gregor, who is on a PTO with the Leafs, made a perfect one touch pass to Cowan, who the Senators had left wide open in front of their net. Cowan made no mistake, one timing it past Mads Sogaard for his first goal in a real Leafs jersey (the Leafs wore practice jerseys in Traverse City).

After the Sens made it 3-1, Cowan found the scoresheet again, this time assisting on Joseph Blandisi's first goal of the pre-season. A point shot from Topi Niemela was deflected by Cowan before ricocheting off Blandisi into the net. It wasn't pretty, but they don't ask how, they just ask how many. 1 goal and 2 points in his first period as a Leaf is a solid start for the kid they call "Cowboy".
