Why losing Aube-Kubel to a waiver claim is a blessing in disguise for the Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs have lost another player to waivers. In other news, water is wet, the sky is blue, and a bear does sh- well, you get the picture. The Leafs have lost more players than any other team in the NHL to the waiver wire over the past few seasons. Several have found full time NHL gigs, while others have not. There have even been reports that teams claim Leafs players just for fun.

In the case of Nicholas Aube-Kubel, a waiver claim is exactly what the Leafs needed. He just hasn't quite worked out in the blue and white. It's great that he finishes checks, but that can't be all you do. That seemed to be the case during his short time with the Leafs. Now, losing an NHL level player isn't great, but the Leafs benefit from shedding Aube-Kubel's $1M cap hit and more importantly, gain a contract slot.

NHL teams are limited to 50 NHL contracts, regardless of whether a player is in the NHL or not. This includes players in the minors or players who have signed ELCs that are not eligible to slide. Before the Capitals claimed Aube-Kubel, the Leafs were full at 50 contracts. Now they have a slot open for a potential signing if need be.

They may have someone in mind for that slot already. Because of his NCAA athlete status, Matthew Knies hasn't signed an NHL deal yet. He may join the Leafs after his college season ends. Alternatively, the Leafs could sign Marlies goaltender Keith Petruzzelli if need be. With Matt Murray out of the lineup and Erik Källgren struggling, having another option in net may not be a bad thing. Petruzzelli has been excellent for the Marlies this season and one of the best goalies in the AHL. Rewarding him with some NHL experience is now a possibility. On the trade front, the Leafs can now bring in a replacement for the injured and perhaps retiring Jake Muzzin without having a need to send a roster player the other way.

I hope Aube-Kubel finds success in Washington. He seems like a player who has the ability to contribute - just not in the Leafs' current system. Moving on from him gives the Leafs flexibility to use the contract slot on a player who will actually play or a young player with a bright future. It will be interesting to see how they use it.
