A lot has been made of the Bruins' decision to offer 20-year-old defenseman Mitchell Miller this week, despite his very public ordeal involving a disabled student, who Miller bullied relentlessly for several years. It ultimately led to Miller being released after being drafted by the Arizona Coyotes. Miller was also released by his USHL team in 2020-21 before being reinstated in 2021-22.
Miller went on to have an astounding season for the USHL's Tri-City Storm last year, posting 39 goals and 83 points in 60 games, following up a successful first year back by scoring 5 points in 5 playoff games.
Multiple Bruins players have spoken publicly about the team taking a chance on Miller, most notably, captain Patrice Bergeron. Now, Foligno has joined his captain in expressing his uncertainty and disappointment with the signing.
Who can blame this team for not wanting to align with someone who tormented a disabled student, directing racial slurs and subjecting him to heinous, disgusting behaviour, causing long-lasting emotional trauma? It's not what the Bruins as an organization are about. It's not the treatment that they would have ever tolerated had it been discovered under their watch, so to see them willfully ignore it because the free agent defenseman had a big year in the USHL is incredibly troubling and speaks to the questionable culture that still exists in the sport.
