McMann was rotating through lines as an extra at practice Monday for the Leafs, which surprised a lot of people given that he was a regular in the second half of last season. Following practice on Monday, head coach Craig Berube was blunt when asked why McMann was on the outside looking in for opening night.
On Sportsnet's 'Real Kyper and Bourne' show on Monday afternoon, Nick Kypreos and Justin Bourne broke down Berube's comments on McMann and compared him to a former Leaf that was placed on waivers in Pierre Engvall.
Given Max Pacioretty's injury history, it likely won't take long before McMann draws back into the lineup, but when he does, he should be prepared to be physical more consistently, otherwise it could be a very long season for the 28-year-old.
The 6'2, 210-pound winger certainly has the size and skill to become a very good power forward, but as Bourne pointed out, it is about him putting all the tools together more consistently.
In 56 games for the Leafs last season, McMann tallied 15 goals and 24 points and earned a two-year extension, which carries a $1.35M cap hit.
