Midway through the first period as Habs forward Patrik Laine was attempting to gain the Leafs' zone, he was caught between two Leafs. One of them was Cedric Pare, who attempted to finish a hit, but caught Laine with a knee-on-knee instead.
Laine left the game and did not return, and in response, Arber Xhekaj jumped Pare and dragged him to the ice before landing several shots to the back of Pare's head.
For his actions, Xhekaj received a misconduct penalty and 27 minutes in penalties that resulted in a 7-minute power-play for the Leafs. Laine was seen leaving the rink with a brace and on crutches, and if that wasn't bad enough, Xhekaj lost a chunk of his paycheck as he was fined $3,385.42 by NHL Player Safety Sunday afternoon.
It will be interesting to see if Ryan Reaves seeks some retribution on Xhekaj when the two sides meet in the regular season.
Pare commented on the incident following the game, noting that it was not his intention to hit Laine like that. Saturday's game was likely Pare's last for the Leafs this pre-season as they are expected to make a number of cuts before their next game on Thursday.
