Auston Matthews being groomed to be the next captain in Toronto?
Auston Matthews' leadership qualities were on full display, as the former 1st overall pick joined several Maple Leafs prospects for some work on Sunday afternoon.
It is no secret that Auston Matthews has been a superstar in the NHL since he came into the league and scored 40 goals as a rookie in 2016. The Arizona product took a huge step last year, as he produced his best statistical year to date, recording a league and career high 69 goals as well as personal best 107 points in 81 GP last season.
It would appear as though Matthews did not only take a step forward statistically last season, he also became much more of a leader on the ice and in the locker room, as is evidenced by his Sunday work session with the team's up-and-comers.
''Auston Matthews is on ice joining Leafs' summer workout and prospects crew.
This man is a Leader and should be the captain. #LeafsForever''
Matthews is setting an incredible example to the Maple Leafs prospects by skating with them, as he is showing that dedication to training is incredibly important to be successful in this league.
With the soon to be 34-year-old
John Tavares show signs of slowing down, the question now is not
ifAuston Matthews will be the captain of the Leafs at some point during his career, but
when
will he become the captain of the Maple Leafs?
