Auston Matthews reveals why he believes there's so much immediate chemistry with Max Domi
On the heels of a combined 9-point game for Auston Matthews and Max Domi on Wednesday, Sheldon Keefe is going right back to the duo again on Saturday night against the Edmonton Oilers, albeit with Matthew Knies on the left side in place of Tyler Bertuzzi.
There has been a lot of talk about how well Matthews and Domi were able to immediately gel on Wednesday. Matthews himself spoke about their natural chemistry after the game, but also elaborated on the matter on Friday after practice. For Matthews, most of their success boils down with how well they communicate with one another and how well they get along off the ice.
"Something I like to do is just communicate, talk and sort stuff out, ask questions, get a feel for what the other guy's thinking as well. That's a pretty big piece, in my opinion, and we've been able to do that"
We sit next to each other on the plane. We enjoy hanging out. We got a great relationship off the ice." - Matthews on Domi
For Domi, this season in Toronto is a dream come true. Not only is he in the city where his dad became an NHL star, but he's there at a time where the Leafs have a generational player like Auston Matthews on the team. Domi isn't taking any of it for granted. Domi referred to himself as Matthews' number 1 fan on Friday, so it's clear that he's just enjoying the ride right now.
"Both of us love tennis so we got a lot to talk about with that. I'm his number 1 fan and love getting to know him." - Domi on Matthews
With Domi's comfort level and how much he clearly enjoys being a Leaf, many are wondering if he'll be willing to take another team-friendly deal when it comes time to negotiate a contract extension to remain a Leaf. Obviously, he fills a clear role in Toronto and loves being a Leaf, so it does appear to be a match made in heaven, even if the defensive aspects of his game are lacking in certain areas.
Domi being so close with Auston Matthews may also aid the team in trying to bring the second generation Leaf back this summer, though time will tell how all of this develops.
