After impressive first seasons with the Maple Leafs, both Bertuzzi and Domi are pending UFAs. The Leafs would like to retain each of them, but in a salary cap world, it may not be feasible.
General manager of the Maple Leafs, Brad Treliving, provided an update on the pair of feisty forwards at the annual NHL Draft Combine this week, provided in this article from Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic.
Treliving told The Athletic that he remains interested in re-signing pending UFAs Max Domi and Tyler Bertuzzi if possible. However, the Leafs GM also noted that even if the pending UF's are interested in re-upping with the Leafs, the fit has to be right for both sides.
Treliving also suggested, that there are roster fixes he needs to address, and he has to address these issues while remaining within the limits of the salary cap.
The Leafs GM, also statesled that there are a few different guys coming up for renewal, and the focus is to make the team better in the process of these negotiations.
The question that comes up is, even though both of these players proved to be effective for the Leafs down the stretch, both playing on the top line with Auston Matthews, will they sign at an amount that will allow the Leafs to address the other holes they need to fill this offseason? Or will the Leafs be forced to choose between one of them?
