The Leafs had reportedly signed the hulking, 6'6, 225-pound blueliner to a two-year deal on July 1st when free agency opened. However, the deal has still not been registered as a report surfaced from the Toronto Sun's Steve Simmons that Hakanpaa was dealing with a significant knee injury that forced him to have surgery.
Hakanpaa was expected to play a significant role on the Leafs' penalty kill, but as training camp draws closer, the concern is growing that things may not be going according to plan.
Following the press conference to introduce Auston Matthews as the 26th captain in Maple Leafs franchise history, Brad Treliving was asked about Hakanpaa's situation. Treliving was very blunt with his answer, being careful not to divulge too much and simply stated that they were "working through" it.
As training camp draws closer, we will likely have a more clarity on Hakanpaa's status in the coming weeks, but with the uncertainty surrounding his health, it has put the Leafs in a difficult spot. Should he be unavailable, the Leafs will have to look to a depleted free agent list to find a serviceable replacement.
