Toronto native Chris Tanev signed a 6-year pact with the Maple Leafs on July 1st, paying him $4.5M per season over than span. Tanev's former club, the Dallas Stars, apparently made a final push to retain the coveted stay at home defender, falling short to the Leafs.
As per Nick Kypreos of the Toronto Star, the Stars and Leafs were not all that far apart on the AAV, with the term being the clincher for Toronto. Kypreos said this week that the Stars were offering Tanev $5M per season.
While the Stars offered a higher AAV than the Maple Leafs, the added years and the potential of playing for his hometown club enticed the defensive defenseman man to sign with the blue and white.
With this significant investment on defence, the Leafs are headed into the 2024-25 season with their most well-rounded D corps in perhaps the last 20 years.
