"With the Stanley Cup Finals coming to a close within the next week or so, offseason chatter is starting to ramp up and the Toronto Maple Leafs have been mentioned plenty. The Leafs of course are in a bit of a cap crunch and have been trying to move some of their heavier contracts to make some room. NHL insider Pierre LeBrun reported last week that the Los Angeles Kings and Maple Leafs had discussions about possibly moving Patrick Marleau to LA. The move would send Marleau and his family back out to California and reunite Marleau with former San Jose Sharks head coach Todd McLellan. However those trade talks fell apart because the Kings wanted the Leafs to take a heavy contract of their own back in return. Now Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reveals which contract that likely was. According to Friedman it's probable the Kings wanted the Leafs to take Jeff Carter and his contract back in return. While Carter's contract is about $1million cheaper than Marleau's it comes with an extra two years. Considering Carter has been a bit banged up while Marleau hasn't missed a game in almost a decade, it's understandable the Leafs' didn't want to continue discussion. Would you have made this trade anyways?
