On January 2, 1992, the Calgary Flames traded Doug Gilmour, Ric Nattress, Jamie Macoun, Kent Manderville and Rick Wamsley to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Gary Leeman, now Leafs head coach Craig Berube, Alexander Godynyuk, Michel Petit and Jeff Reese. The trade is considered one of the most lop-sided deals to this day with the Leafs the very clear winners.
Most people know that there was a major fallout between Gilmour and Flames management after he took the Flames to arbitration for a new contract the previous summer. What many don't know, however, is how Gilmour found out he was being traded. On a recent episode of "Missin' Curfew" Gilmour shared the wild story about how he found out while at a hotel in Sam Francisco that he was being dealt.
Gilmour then revealed he told the team that evening at the New Years Eve party that he would be staying in Calgary to train until he was traded, which did not take long. He was dealt to the Maple Leafs just two days later.
After arriving in Toronto, Gilmour registered 49 points in 40 games. The following season, he had the best regular season in Leafs franchise history, where he registered 32 goals, 95 assists, and 127 points.
From the moment he arrived in Toronto, Gilmour's skill, along with his gritty style of play, endeared him to fans and he quickly became a fan-favourite. To this day, he continues to be involved with the Leafs alumni and can often be found at the Leafs' home games and charity events.
