The remarkable season continues for Maple Leafs' top prospect in Easton Cowan as the youngster now sits with 24 points in 15 playoff games. The London Knights have been rolling through the OHL playoffs and a lot of that has to do with Cowan's offensive performances.
Last night was Game 1 of the OHL Championships between the Knights and the Oshawa Generals. The home team came out victorious by a score of 8-1 and Cowan had a hand in each of the first 5 goals scored, which included 4 assists. Not only does he have 24 points throughout the post-season but he has recorded 16 of them in just his last 7 games.
With less than 2 minutes remaining in the second period and already up 4-0, the Knights got to work in quick order with their power play after Cowan raced from one side of the ice to the other, looped behind his own net, before setting up Denver Barkey at the point for the goal and his 5th point of the evening.
The Knights swept the Flint Firebirds in the first round, swept the Kitchener Rangers in the second round, and then defeated the Saginaw Spirit in the Conference Finals in 6 games.
Cowan currently sits third in the OHL scoring race with 24 points and trails only Oshawa's Calum Ritchie (25 points) and North Bay Batallion's Sandis Vilamnis (27). By the way the first game ended, it is more than likely we will see Cowan atop the leaderboard in no time, despite Oshawa sporting a few players in the top-5.
The winner of the OHL Championship is not only awarded the J. Ross Robertson Cup for winning their respective league but they also qualify for the Memorial Cup. The prestigious event encompasses the winners of the three Canadian junior leagues - OHL, QMJHL, and WHL - as well as the host city, which this year is Saginaw.
