Earlier this week in a shocking announcement, the Washington Capitals announced that they had purchased popular website Cap Friendly and will be shutting it down as early as July 5th according to Elliotte Friedman.
On yesterday's 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, Friedman revealed that the acquisition has left some teams scrambling to come up with a backup plan, but also noted that some teams, including the Toronto Maple Leafs, already have a system in place.
"There are some teams scrambling today. There will be some teams that don't have this kind of infrastructure... One thing people are talking about here is what a huge blow, a disaster this is going to be for some teams if they don't have their own set up... I went through and I don't think this is everybody, but these are the teams that have something... Seattle... New Jersey, Carolina, I heard Chicago, Islanders... same goes for Toronto, Brandon Pridham, they have something there, Columbus, Pittsburgh, they didn't have anything before, but once Kyle Dubas got there, they started building something.
The other teams have varying degrees of concern and worry about where they're going to go here... One more, Vegas has one too."
Friedman also revealed that the Capitals purchased Cap Friendly because they didn't have a system in place previously and felt it made more sense to purchase the infrastructure and have it available immediately rather than develop their own and wait one or two years before it is operational.
