The former sixth-overall pick from the 2018 draft has had trouble putting all the tools he has together and struggled to live up to the hype that came with being drafted in the top-10. Last season however, while playing on the lowly San Jose Sharks, Zadina set a career-high with 13 goals while skating in 72 games.
After not receiving a qualifying offer from the Sharks, Filip Zadina became a free agent, but has yet to sign a contract with an NHL team. With training camps around the corner and rosters across the league essentially set, Zadina's next hope is to join a team on a PTO. Zadina is reportedly in discussions with three teams regarding a PTO and the Leafs are one of those teams according to his agent, who also happens to represent Mitch Marner.
Elliotte Friedman revealed Monday that the Leafs are reportedly looking to add at the left wing position, and given Zadina's ability to play both RW and LW, he appears to be an option for the club.
As training camp draws closer, there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding Nicholas Robertson, so bringing in Zadina as a fallback option on a PTO is a wise move for Brad Treliving. It costs nothing, unless he impresses and earns himself a contract. It also puts pressure on Robertson to re-up before training camp to avoid losing his roster spot, as the Leafs are not keen on trading him.
