Selected in the third round of the 2004 entry draft, the Toronto Maple Leafs had high hopes for Justin Pogge when they decided to keep him and trade Tuukka Rask to the Boston Bruins back in 2006. We all know how that worked out as Rask went on to win a Stanley Cup and become a franchise goaltender while Pogge's career never really took off.
On Monday, the Vancouver Canucks announced that Pogge, 38, would be joining the Abbotsford Canucks as goaltending coach.
While his NHL career saw him skate in just 7 NHL games, Pogge parlayed that into a 17-year career that saw him play 267 AHL games before spending the last 10 years of his career in overseas where he made stops in Sweden, Slovakia, Italy and Germany. More recently, Pogge acted as a goaltending consultant for the Columbus Blue Jackets and was part of Team Canada's goaltending coaching at various international tournaments.
Pogge joins former Maple Leafs assistant coach Manny Malhotra on the Abbotsford coaching staff as they look to build on a 2023-2024 season that saw them go 40-25-7.
