Jason Spezza was unable to capture a Stanley Cup during his playing career, but he has every intention of doing everything in his power to win one someday -- as an NHL general manager.
Following Kyle Dubas' dismissal in Toronto just over one year ago, Spezza tendered his resignation, wasting no time in following Dubas to Pittsburgh. After spending the year learning the ropes under Dubas, Spezza has now officially been named the general manager of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Along with Spezza, Amanda Kessel, sister of former Maple Leaf Phil Kessel, has also been added to the WBS front office, taking on the role of "manager of minor league operations and the assistant general manager", according to TSN.
Spezza, 41, retired from professional hockey as a member of the Maple Leafs back in 2022, having played 1,248 career regular season NHL games, producing 363 goals and 995 career points. The Toronto native also notched 76 playoff points across 97 playoff games during his impressive career.
Congrats to Spezza on his new gig and hopefully it won't be long before we see him take on a GM gig at the NHL level. With Kyle Dubas still pulling double-duty as President and GM in Pittsburgh, a promotion for Spezza might happen sooner than anyone thinks.
