During Saturday's loss to the New York Rangers, there was a great deal of concern among Leafs Nation when Chris Tanev took a one-timer off of the right knee and which forced him out of the game in the second period. Thankfully, he was able to return to the bench for the third period and was able to resume the game, albeit in a reduced role.
After the loss, Leafs head coach Craig Berube revealed that Tanev likely could have played more than he did in the 3rd period, but he wasn't about to take any unnecessary chances with his top right-shot blueliner.
Some good news to report coming out of practice on Monday, as Tanev was a participant in the morning skate after a full day off on Sunday, indicating that he'll likely suit up against the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight.
Tanev has been a revelation for the Leafs on the blueline, with many of his teammates complimenting his willingness to lay his body on the line, blocking shots and taking hits to make plays. He has quickly become one of Craig Berube's most trusted soldiers at 5v5, on the penalty kill, and late in games when trying to preserve a lead.
Partnered with Morgan Rielly, Tanev has really helped solidify a Leafs blueline that was desperately in need of an upgrade. Many aren't huge fans of the length of his deal, a 6-year pact worth $4.5M per season, but he has certainly provided the Leafs with what they were looking for in a solid defensive defenseman, who can move the puck well. I'm sure we're all very thankful that he was able to avoid any significant injury on the play.
