Acquired by the Maple Leafs ahead of the 2023 trade deadline along with Sam Lafferty, a conditional 5th round pick in 2024 and a conditional 5th round pick in 2025 from Chicago in exchange for a conditional 2025 1st round pick, 2026 2nd round pick, Joey Anderson and Pavel Gogolev, McCabe became the Leafs' best two-way defenseman during the regular season and playoffs.
Entering the final year of his 4-year contract that he signed with Chicago, Leafs fans have been hoping an extension for the 30-year-old and should be happy with the update McCabe provided after skating today.
McCabe noted that he loves being in Toronto and while he, like other players will leave the negotiations to his agent, noted that talks about an extension have already begun.
What that extension will look like, no one can be certain, but it shouldn't exceed more than four or five years given McCabe's age and it shouldn't cost much more than the $4M he is being paid now between Chicago and Toronto, especially after Chris Tanev signed for $4.5M per season to play on the top pair with Morgan Rielly.
In 73 games with the Leafs last season, McCabe set career highs in goals with 8 and points with 28 to go along with 129 blocks and 219 hits. McCabe has skated in a total of 557 games with the Leafs, Sabres and Blackhawks amassing 152 points, 964 blocks and 1070 hits.
