Per the Fourth Period's David Pagnotta, the Maple Leafs defenseman is open to the idea of a potential return to Toronto, but he has every intention of going to market on July 1st to see what else is out there for him.
Edmundson was acquired by the Maple Leafs from the Washington Capitals ahead of the trade deadline due to his 6-foot-5, 221-pound frame, his tremendous character, his playoff experience and his winning pedigree.
Largely relegated to 3rd pairing duty in Toronto, most often slotted alongside Timothy Liljegren, perhaps Edmundson would like to see if there's a larger role out there for him somewhere.
Edmundson total cap hit for the past few seasons was $3.5M, a slight increase from the $3.1M AAV he had earned on his previous contract through the 2019-20 season. Perhaps the 30-year-old is worried that the Leafs simply won't offer what he believes he's worth, and there's nothing wrong with keeping your options open.
