Tavares is entering this season on an expiring contract, and while many are hoping that he takes a hometown discount to stay with the Toronto Maple Leafs beyond this season, his future with the club remains shrouded in mystery.
The former Leafs captain told media members who were present at today's Auston Matthews captaincy press conference that he doesn't plan to discuss his contract negotiations publicly, according to Sportsnet's Luke Fox. He did, however, state that he would like to continue on with the Maple Leafs beyond 2024-25.
It remains to be seen whether or not the club wants to keep Tavares around long-term, but at the very least, he wants to remain a member of the Maple Leafs, which shouldn't come as a surprise considering he's been a life-long fan and a former proud owner of some pretty iconic Maple Leafs bed sheets.
Tavares is expected to wear an "A" next season for the Maple Leafs.
