The NHL announced on Wednesday that they have hired retired NHLer Ryan Getzlaf, a very reputable name in the hockey community, to join the Department of Player Safety.
At last, there may be a voice of reason in the room with George Parros, who has seemingly taken every opportunity he can find to slap the Leafs with unprecedented suspensions.
There has been a lot of speculation over the years that Parros has held a grudge against the Maple Leafs after an unfortunate run-in with Colton Orr ultimately led to a scary scene, which had a hand in ending Parros' career. If we are to believe this rumour, he's had it out for the Leafs ever since.
Every single time a Maple Leaf does anything questionable, even if they have no history and the intent to injure just isn't there, the player is still hit with a suspension, sometimes lengthier than what the precedent calls for.
Now that Getzlaf is working with him, there's another voice in the room and hopefully the former captain's voice is a forceful one at the table. For too long, the Department of Player Safety has been heavily biased and now there is someone else that can provide a more balanced and neutral view. Most importantly, it'll have somebody without an axe to grind against Toronto.
