Over the weekend the hockey world learned some very tragic and unfortunate news as it was announced that Ray Emery had passed away. The former NHL goalie drowned while swimming in the Hamilton Harbour.Emery had actually spent the prior night along with other former professional players as they hit the ice for Hockey Night in Hamilton, a charity game that raises funds for Food4Kids. Current Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas was actually part of the management group in Sault Ste. Marie when they drafted Emery in 1999 and posted some words about the former goalie. "My wife and I were just talking about Ray Emery last night and to see the news of his passing this afternoon is equally sad and shocking. I was fortunate to be around Ray at the very start of his promising career in Sault Ste. Marie, where we drafted him in 1999, and then again at the end of his career, when he played for us in 2016-17 with the Toronto Marlies. Ray had battled through an injury that typically ends most athletes' careers. Ray's smile and intelligence made him a magnetic personality. You always rooted for him to reach his vast potential even as he went through the many ups and downs of his playing career. My deepest condolences to his family and friends for their loss. He will be missed."
