As training camp comes to an end and NHL teams gear up for the start of the season, the Toronto Maple Leafs are set to face their rivals, the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday night.
Recently, it was revealed that Joseph Woll's injury may be more concerning than previously thought and the young netminder has been placed on injured reserve and is expected to miss at least three games.
While that report is a significant one, there was another situation that arose on Wednesday that drew some attention -- an exchange between Auston Matthews and a reporter that he doesn't seem all too fond of.
Reporter Steve Simmons asked Matthews, as noted by 34sixteen on X:
Auston Matthews has already embraced his role as captain, showcasing spectacular poise on and off the ice. He has already publicly acknowledging teammates like Nick Robertson, and how his hard work earned him a spot in the opening lineup. Now, the way he is handling the added media responsibility shows just as much grace.
Coming off an incredible season in which he scored an impressive 69 goals in 81 regular-season games, Matthews is eager to lead the Maple Leafs under a new, tougher playing style that head coach Craig Berube aims to implement throughout the lineup.
This revamped Maple Leafs squad is fully embracing the playoff-style hockey needed for success and is poised to impress the league with their new approach. Matthews, as captain, will be leading the charge. He certainly seems ready.
