Easton Cowan, the Toronto Maple Leafs' first-round pick (28th overall) in the 2023 draft, had an outstanding 2023-24 hockey season. On his way to an OHL Championship, he was named the OHL regular season MVP and playoff MVP, racking up 96 points in 54 regular-season games and 34 points in 18 playoff games.
It seems as though Cowan will be rewarded for his remarkable junior season and strong performance at the rookie showcase camp. According to David Alter on X, Cowan has been skating in Group A for the Maple Leafs.
Group A features Maple Leafs stars such as Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, and Morgan Rielly, along with several regular NHL players. Cowan's presence among these elite players suggests he is a frontrunner to make the team out of camp.
Additionally, Cowan is being paired with line-mates Alex Nylander and Jacob Quillan, both of whom are also looking for NHL spots this season.
Jonas Siegel shared on X:
It's clear what Easton Cowan needs to do to secure an NHL roster spot this year, as he clearly possesses the necessary skill set, he must adapt to the rigors of being a regular NHL player by honing the small details that contribute to an all-around game.
New Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube on his expectations for Cowan in camp, as reported by Nick Barden on X:
Cowan is a tremendous talent with all the tools to become an impactful player in the NHL. He has a powerful shot, excellent hockey sense, strong work ethic and impressive puck skills. Now, he just needs to have a strong camp and prove to Berube that he is ready to make the jump to the NHL this year.
The real question isn't whether Cowan will be an effective NHL player, but when he will achieve that status.
