The Leafs handed the starter keys to Woll prior to Game 5, after fellow netminder Iyla Samsonov faltered in the first four games of the series. Woll repaid his coach's faith by playing outstanding on Tuesday night, making 27 saves to keep Toronto alive and force Game 6 tonight.
When Woll is on his game, there is very little wasted movement in net, he comes across very calm and focused.
Veteran defenceman Joel Edmundson shares a similar sentiment on Woll while also providing a very interesting comparison to fellow goalie Jordan Binnington. Edmunson and Binnington were teammates in St. Louis, winning a cup together in 2019.
During Jordan Binnington's time in the NHL he has shown he is the furthest thing from calm with his antics.
During the 2021-22 season, Binnington lost his head at Nazem Kadri, deciding to swing his stick at him after the whistle.
Another example of Binnington's calm, sensible actions occurred in a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Binnington delivered a clothesline to Jason Zucker when Zucker was skating behind the net on a routine play. Binnington shoved his glove in Zucker's face, causing him to violently crash into the boards.
While the comparison by Edmunson might be a little off, it was a rookie Binnington who stepped in and helped the Blues win a Cup back in 2019. Toronto will need Woll to be at his best again tonight if the Maple Leafs have any shot of pushing things back to Boston for Game 7 this weekend.
